Art Instead of Aggravation
Enough with Dystopia, Frustration, Failed Institutions, Defeatism and Fear. Instead, Here Is My Novice Fine-Art Photography of my Daughter's Cat, Flowers and a Cigarette Butt Mixing with Nature.
Hello, fellow Bluestockings! Thank you for joining, supporting and participating in our salon. I’d like to welcome my newest paid subscriber and bluestocking JV skoolhouserock. Your support not only humbles me but allows me to develop and grow this newsletter, my writing and my art. Grazie, JV!
If you enjoy posts like today’s, please think of becoming a free or paid subscriber. My literature reviews; literary, art and sociocultural essays; writing exercises and writing tips are offered to you for free. My newsletter drops every Tuesday and Saturday in your in-box. You can also leave thoughts in a post's comment section and in my Notes’ chat section.
If you are able to financially support my work with an annual or monthly subscription, you will receive all of the above along with posts focusing on a current literary or sociocultural issue or event, specialized discussion threads and my “Novel Reflections” where I share my thoughts as I write my first novel.
For those who are able to offer financial support as a founding member, in addition to all of the above, you will receive personal feedback on one written work of any genre up to 6,000 words. My feedback will be provided to you through a written response and a one-hour Zoom call. Best of all, your name will also be included in the acknowledgements section of my current book-length fiction projects.
I accidentally published my Saturday newsletter on Thursday. I am sending it again on Saturday for readers who missed it.
Human beings are not designed for the endless barrage of violence, evil propaganda, boneheadedness and trauma. People and the U.S. institutions, especially the fourth estate, have let us down. This past week was a tipping point, and I need step back, do self care and refuel. The first sentence of Jackie Armstrong’s essay “The Healing Power of Art” in MoMA magazine declares, “Art can heal.”
For today’s post, I wanted to share some beginning fine art photos I have taken over the past month. In addition to reading photography books, I’ve been watching YouTube videos hosted and produced by fine art and professional photographers. One of my favorite channels is created and hosted by the fine art photographer and writer Tatiana Hopper.
Because of my budget, I couldn’t purchase even a used DSLR camera outright following my Introduction to Photography class back in June. One of Tatiana’s episodes addressed how photography can be learned even without a proper camera.
Until my actual camera arrived this week (an EOS Canon Rebel T6), I’ve been training my eye to see images and practice composition. Once an image captured me, I took it with my smart phone’s camera. For processing these digital images, I’ve used the camera tools on my phone and on Instagram. My plan is to purchase Lightroom next month or in September. Not happy with my composition and development in some of these photos but learning from mistakes.
She really is. Couldn’t be more proud of her.
