I saw today that WILDCAT, Ethan Hawke's Flannery O'Connor film, has reached streaming. Incredible and inspiring fiction writer but a messy person. I don't deny her racism.
I'm one of those American women of a certain age with an obscure chronic illness that has caused me to be partially blind, but not fully blind. (Thankfully.) I understand how our society treats people, especially women, especially women of a certain age, with illnesses that aren't always visibly debilitating. Electing more blue representatives won't fix this entirely, but it will be a start. Solidarity and support and love to you.
There still remains so much ableism in the world despite advancements in some countries. It's not just going to take policies but an attitude adjustment. Even I have internal abelism. Like racism, it's baked into society and culture. We didn't create it but we can all dismantle it.
Unless my MS has been triggered, and I've had to use my crutch, I've heard from people, "You don't look disabled." I ask them what disability looks like. So many invisible disabilities.
Hi Laura, great post. I tried to get into that zoom call but QR code wasn’t working for me (or I just wasn’t doing it right.)
From an election passed, the phrase “crip the vote” was used to encourage disabled voters to vote for their interests; it really does matter.
This sounds like I am making it up, but I’m not: One Christmas Eve, maybe twenty years ago, my mother mentioned that she thought the Holocaust was wildly exaggerated—only about a million Jews were killed.
When I became apoplectic, I said, “You know they came for people like me first, don’t you? They practiced on us!”
Merry fucking Christmas. She couldn’t understand why I was so upset.
Yes! It’s an awesome phrase. When I was studying women’s and gender studies, I learned more about CripTheory.
Did you have a chance to read the article from The 19th about the call? It was rather critical. During the call. the panelists mentioned people were having problems getting on most of all vision impaired and blind voters. I agree with The 19th it wasn’t as well organized as it could have been, but I also agree with the panelists trying to do anything last minute with a disability or multiple disabilities is a challenge abled-body people don’t understand. Uh. That’s why we need accommodations.

Thank you for sharing! I am 61 with multiple immune disorders, Sjorgens, EDS, rheumatoid arthritis , etc. I successfully beat stage 4 NH Lymphoma. I have just realized that I am truly disabled and will start the paperwork on that. I wasn't in denial, I just prayed I could return to part time work. Two of my Drs said absolutely Not!
It makes me feel less than. I'll be keeping up with Disabled for Harris!
This is a moving read, a message people need to learn about and think on.

Thank you for your support, Andra.

Thank you for educating us, Laura.
I’m still learning too.
Wow! How inspiring to all!
WTF is wrong with this Country? Do much wealth, so little compassion. Disgraceful.
