Beautiful, moving and sad at the same time. You have overcome so much, and your determination is more than admirable. As a Catholic myself, I have experienced comments that were less than flattering. My wife has has chronic migraines since childhood (now well contained by Aimovig) and has been excoriated for missing work because of a “headache” by both makes and females.

Keep up the fight, Laura. You can go back to your artistic endeavors with a glad heart in January.

Oh my gosh. Thank you, Mark. I am sorry your wife also deals with chronic migraines. People who are lucky enough not to have them don't understand they are not an average headache. It's not unusual for me to have them be intractable..Human beings can be such creeps way too many times.

I honestly don't get why some have massive problems with our faith. Much of it of course adds up to ignorance about it.

You're welcome Laura. I was moved. It breaks my heart to see her suffer. On top of the migraines, she has cervical dystonia and has to get Myobloc injections in her upper back, neck and head every three months. As for our faith, I let them practice theirs in peace and with respect. It would be great if they could do the same. When I met my wife’s family in Alabama the first time, we joked about what would be worse, my being Catholic or Muslim. She said wryly, “open question.”

My family is mostly Catholic. I’m probably the only person who wasn’t baptized Catholic (on my mother’s side). I only heard Catholics weren’t really Christians once from someone from the Caribbean. I was taken aback.

Whenever I hear MTG and Boebert, I respond, "Big dummy!"

My grandmother’s family name was Braun. Immigrants from Austria who settled in a town in Kansas, their home was burned down by the KKK because they were Catholic. They moved to Minnesota.

A truly powerful statement, Laura, all the more potent for me because I had not been aware of your MS before reading it.

Before my 21st birthday, I was introduced to a man suffering MS. A former architect who still commanded a business despite his lost ability to sit at an easel, he was a remarkable person and, despite the disease’s ravaging of his body, he never lost his critical thinking, his open-hearted personality and, most impressively for me, his sense of humour.

Knowing John taught me to appreciate the value in ALL virtuous people, no matter their circumstances, and, having already admired your writing, I am now in awe of your ability to write with such confidence, such precision and, above all, such persuasive power.

Please keep your Roman Catholicism sacred to you - I have many quibbles with religion per se but papal principles have generally molded my life and for that I am eternally grateful.

Party politics also troubles me but I pray with all my heart that General Fascista and his Orange Shirts are wiped out in this year’s US general election. Your nation IS great, if only you can keep it.

Your kind words about my writing and me mean a lot and are so appreciated.

I was never a huge Celine Dion fan (I'm more goth, punk and rock), but I always thought her voice was incredible. Her stiff person syndrome diagnosis made my stomach drop. I watched Prime's documentary on her and broke intl tears when she was in medical crisis. I not only emphasized with her? buy have been in medical crisis tik. First her to have that stellar performance at the Patis Olympics demonstrates to never count out the disabled.

Like most everything in life, the Catholic Church is complex and holds a lot of nuance. The institution itself needs massive reform and still needs to hold itself accountable for a lot of harm. I am always critical of it. But like historian and author Gary Wills, I am Catholic because of the Apostles Creed. That's what it boils down to.

My mother said to me when I was tiny and the Klan was on the news.

"Never forget. The Klan hates black people, Jews and Catholics. If they're not coming after us today, they will be tomorrow. That's why we stand with black people and Jews."
